  35. Comic Chat is a new kind of graphical chat program, developed at Microsoft. In 
  36. recent years, a number of graphical chat programs have appeared for online 
  37. services and the Internet. Comic Chat takes a different approach to other 
  38. graphical chat programs, by using a visual representation of conversations based
  39. on comics conventions. As users type text into Comic Chat, a comic strip unfolds
  40. showing the various participants in the conversation as comics characters, and 
  41. their utterances in word balloons.

  43. Inside of each Comic Chat client is a small, fast expert system for comics 
  44. generation. On the fly, each Comic Chat client automatically determines a number
  45. of aspects related to comics generation. These include: 
  46.  
  47.     - Which characters to place in each panel
  48.     - The gestures and expressions for these characters
  49.     - Where the characters should be placed, and how they should be oriented
  50.     - The outline form of each word balloon
  51.     - The layout of word balloons in the panels
  52.     - When to move on to a new panel
  53.     - What zoom factor to use for each panel

  64. 2. Supported configurations/platforms

  67. Comic Chat currently runs under Windows 95.  When Comic Chat is delivered, it 
  68. will also run under Windows NT 4.0.  Comic Chat requires a minimum configuration
  69. of a 486 processor, 8mb RAM, 256 color video and a 9600 baud modem.

  76. If you want to connect to an IRC chat server that you already know about, you can
  77. do this by expanding the Connect dialog box.  Then enter the server address, port
  78. number, and channel name.  For example: Comicsrv1.Microsoft.Com, 6667, 
  79. #Comic_Chat.  Currently we support the following channels on our servers:

  97. Q. Will you be updating Comic Chat?

  99.     A. We will be updating our Web site frequently and will let you know when
  100.        new updates are available.

  103. Q. How do I connect to other IRC chat rooms/channels? 
  104.  
  105.     A. If you want to connect to an IRC chat room or channel you already know
  106.        about, click the File menu, and then click New Window if you are 
  107.        running within Internet Explorer 3.0 (just click New otherwise). 
  108.        Expand the dialog box that comes up so you can see the Server, Port 
  109.        and Channel entries, and then provide the following information: 
  110.  
  111.        - In the Server box, type the IRC server name. 
  112.          The default entry is ComicSrv1.Microsoft.com.
  113.          Replace this with the IRC server you are going to connect to. 
  114.        
  115.        - In the Port box, type the IRC server's port number.  
  116.          The default entry is 6667.
  117.  
  118.        - In the Channel box, type the channel, preceded by a number sign (#).
  119.          The default channel name is #Comic_Chat.

  122. Q. How can I tell what version of Comic Chat I am running?
  123.  
  124.     A. If you are running Comic Chat outside of Internet Explorer, click
  125.        the Help menu, and then click About Microsoft Comic Chat. The version
  126.        number will be listed at the top of the dialog box. From within 
  127.        Internet Explorer you can chose Microsoft Comic Chat Help from the 
  128.        Help menu, and then click About Microsoft Comic Chat from there.

  131. Q. Why can't I get access to any Microsoft Comic Chat or IRC chat rooms? 
  132.  
  133.     A. If you are accessing the Internet from your corporate network, you 
  134.        will be able to download the Comic Chat program; however, most
  135.        corporate proxy servers limit access to chat rooms. If you have any
  136.        questions, please contact your system administrator or use a dial-up
  137.        analog or ISDN line to access the Internet.

  140. Q. Can I create my own comic characters?
  141.  
  142.     A. At this time you will only be able to use the characters supplied with
  143.        Microsoft Comic Chat.  We will be adding new characters throughout the
  144.        duration of the beta.

  147. Q. Can I create my own backgrounds?
  148.  
  149.     A. We are supplying a limited number of backgrounds with the beta, we 
  150.        will add more soon.

  153. Q. Why don't all the characters have gestures?
  154.  
  155.     A. In the original Beta 1 release there were some characters who's emotions
  156.        had not yet been articulated.  This has been updated in the current 
  157.        release.  When you go to the View, Options menu and then choose the
  158.        characters tab, you can see what gestures each character has before you
  159.        choose it as your character.

  161. Q. Does Comic Chat run under Windows NT 4.0?
  162.  
  163.     A. Comic Chat currently will run only on Windows 95.  Windows NT 4.0
  164.        will be supported in the final release.

  167. Q. How does the emotion wheel (lower righthand corner) work?
  168.  
  169.     A. The emotion wheel enables you to manually change your character's
  170.        emotions. The center of the emotion wheel is neutral emotion. Where
  171.        there are multiple levels of emotion, the intensity of the emotion
  172.        increases as the control moves away from the center. 
  173.  
  174.        To see a tooltip describing each emotion, rest your mouse pointer over
  175.        one of the eight faces around the perimeter of the emotion wheel. To
  176.        change your character's emotions, drag the control (the dark dot in 
  177.        the center of the emotion wheel) from the center of the emotion wheel.

  179. Q. How can I tell characters apart when there are duplicate characters?
  180.  
  181.     A. Move your mouse pointer over the character and then pause; a tooltip
  182.        appears that displays the user name and character.

  185. Q. How do I print?

  187.     A. Go to the File Menu, Select Print menu, choose Properties, Graphics.
  188.        Change the resolution to 150 or 300 bps.  This will speed up printing
  189.        and still provide high quality.

  194.     A. 14.4 baud Modem   Approximately 13 minutes
  195.        19.2 baud Modem   Approximately 10 minutes

  198. Q. How big is Microsoft Comic Chat to download?

  200.     A. The program with its existing artwork is currently 1 MB compressed.

  203. Q. How much space does Comic Chat take up?
  204.  
  205.     A.  The Comic Chat program with its existing artwork is currently 4 MB.
  206.         Subsequent artwork and character updates will increase this size.

  209. Q. Can I uninstall Comic Chat?
  210.  
  211.     A. Yes. To uninstall Comic Chat, open Control Panel, and then double
  212.        click Add/Remove Programs. Select Microsoft Comic Chat from the list.

  215. Q. Why does it say my ID is in use when I go to another chat room? 
  216.  
  217.     A. Nicknames (IDs) must be unique. Your connection will be refused if: 
  218.  
  219.        - You are already connected to a chat room on the server.
  220.        - You just recently disconnected and the server has not refreshed. 
  221.        - Someone else is using your nickname. 
  222.  
  223.        To connect, you can either choose a new nickname or make sure that all
  224.        Microsoft Comic Chat clients have been closed and then wait a minute
  225.        and reopen Microsoft Comic Chat.

  228. Q. How do I get more panels across the screen? 
  229.  
  230.     A. There are a few things you can try: 
  231.  
  232.        - Increase your screen resolution by using Display Properties in 
  233.          Control Panel. 
  234.        - Maximize the window. 
  235.        - Move the vertical splitter to the right to make the member list
  236.          thinner. 
  237.  
  238.        Once you have done this, click the View menu, and then choose the 
  239.        largest number of panels you can. Depending on your screen resolution
  240.        and monitor size, you can select from one to five frames.
  241.  
  242. Q. What is the difference between Comic Chat and IRC chat? 
  243.  
  244.     A. Microsoft Comic Chat is a graphical chat client that can be used like
  245.        any text chat client on the IRC channel. Not everyone inside the
  246.        channel (chat room) needs to be using Microsoft Comic Chat for this to
  247.        work. Text chat users will automatically be assigned a character, so 
  248.        that the entire chat will be graphically represented to the Microsoft
  249.        Comic Chat client user(s).

  251.       NOTE:
  252.        When using Microsoft Comic Chat on an IRC channel where most of
  253.        the other users are using IRC text clients, it is a good idea to begin by
  254.        clicking the Options menu and then checking the Do Not Send Comic Information box. 
  255.            This will prevent special comics messages from being sent to the other
  256.            chat clients. Once you log off Comic Chat, the client will reset. When you log on
  257.        the next time, the Do Not Send Comic Information box is not checked.

  259. Q. Why do I get an "HTTP 1.0 / 404 Object Not Found" error from the chatroom web page?
  260.  
  261.     A. The name of the room files and the names of the channels on the server were
  262.        changed.  Your browser or your internet service provider may be caching the web
  263.        pages and you are seeing the old page which links to files which no longer exist.  
  264.        To get around this you can try to refresh the web page and/or clear the local 
  265.        cache if your browser caches the file.
